Liquor Shops in Karnataka to Shut Down Completely from May 29 – Liquor Dealers Protest Government Policies

Liquor dealers across Karnataka have announced a complete shutdown of all liquor shops, bars, and wine stores starting May 29, in protest against the state government’s new policies. This move is expected to deal a major blow to alcohol consumers in the state.

Why the Shutdown?

The Karnataka government has proposed a significant hike in excise license renewal fees. Under the new proposal, license fees for liquor outlets in both urban and rural areas are set to double. Additionally, liquor prices have reportedly been increased threefold, severely affecting sales.

Dealers Express Anger

According to Karunakar Hegde, Vice President of the Karnataka Liquor Dealers’ Association, “The government’s new policies have disrupted our entire business model. With the increased license fees and soaring liquor prices, running our businesses has become unfeasible. Hence, we’ve decided to enforce a complete shutdown starting May 29.”

Government’s Response

To address the crisis, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to hold a meeting with the liquor dealers’ association on May 29. However, if the discussions do not yield a satisfactory resolution, liquor outlets across the state are prepared for an indefinite shutdown.

New Excise Rules for the Upcoming Fiscal Year

A new excise year will begin in Karnataka from July. As part of this, over 13,000 liquor shops across the state are required to renew their licenses. The government has issued a draft notification proposing a substantial hike in the license renewal fees.

Impact on the Public

If the shutdown is enforced, a liquor shortage could emerge across the state, affecting pubs, restaurants, and liquor retail stores significantly.

Final Decision Pending

The outcome of the government-dealer meeting scheduled for May 26 will be crucial in determining whether the strike will proceed. If the government does not roll back the proposed fee hike, liquor stores may remain closed for an extended period.
